The firm was founded in 1985 by Bruce Johnson, Frank Robinson, William Neff and Thomas Ragonetti, partners in two of Denver's most respected firms. Predictably, this caused quite a stir. Originally named Johnson, Robinson, Neff & Ragonetti, P.C., the new firm set up shop in Denver's 17th Street Plaza, a home it would outgrow within its first year. By the end of 1985, Arthur E. Otten Jr., a former partner of Robinson and Ragonetti, joined forces with the new firm, bringing with him prized client Colorado National Bank. Those in the legal and business communities who may have greeted Johnson, Robinson, Neff & Ragonetti's arrival with skepticism now took notice. The new firm was fast becoming an admired force on Denver's legal scene.

The firm grew from seven to 20 lawyers in a mere two years.
